June - gone too soon

We had a Beehives only girls camp this year at Bryce Canyon and it was great. With only 15 girls I was glad to try something different. There were close to 50 yw the previous two years so this was somewhat easier. Not to mention that their age is so cute, sweet, and generally happy to do whatever! For privacy, I'm not posting their beautiful faces here but I couldn't resist putting in a scenic shot from our Queens Garden hike.

I FINALLY hiked to the "G" with our boys for the first time in our lives. It was fairly steep but not very long. That's it behind the boys. They enjoyed it but need some more hiking experience because they were getting jelly legs on the way down.

To help ME prepare for hiking at girls camp, I did several hikes near us - this one with a group which was fun to learn a new route so if I were to go by myself I wouldn't get lost ; ) The view goes all the way down to the windmills in Spanish Fork.

 I took this pic while on a garden tour (kind of like a Parade of Gardens) with some friends. We've made it an annual event to spend a day and a half every June to see different private gardens across the Wasatch front. These "flowers" are made from re-bar and plates. The owner says she buys the plates from thrift stores. The purple cluster is a group of little glass mugs.

Me and the boys went to the rodeo - front row seats this year. Truth be told, the boys were fidgety and paying almost no attention to the arena by 9:30 so we saw most of the bull riding but left early to avoid ugly traffic. But the strawberries and cream were divine. Hint - use ice cream base over your berries and you'll be hooked.

We have seen more progress on the new home. The trusses were delivered and set in one morning and nearly all the sheeting completed the second day. Now the plumber has been in putting in drain pipes. This has caused us to realize we need to have final selections for tubs, showers, sink height etc ready asap. You'd think we'd recalled that from the first time but no, it crept up on us. 

Hopefully the HVAC guys are coming soon, a bit more plumbing, and electrical. After they're done we can have a 4 way inspection (includes framing) then things can start to be closed up. Windows are on their way but we need to finalize the door choices.

This is the view from near the south west corner of our lot - the horse panels have since been moved. You can better see now how the deck will work and that the back is truly a walk-out.

We were about to fix up an old bike for Bennett to learn on, but after looking at the cost of all the parts we decided to ask Bennett if he wanted to split the cost with us on a new bike using his birthday money. He agreed (crying came later) and is finally learning to ride, with training wheels for now. It has been a good step to take to help him gain strength in his leg muscles.

This is not a chicken massacre, nor are they sleeping - just taking a big ole dust bath. This helps them smother tiny critters that can become a problem in their feathers. Any loose dirt will do, and in the heat they love it if it's a bit moist.

Busy May

This handsome graduate wanted his picture taken in front of the playground - his favorite part of kindergarten. He enjoyed his class this year and I thought he had a great teacher.

Jared was able to coach Paxton's machine pitch baseball team - the Giants. It was really great; I thought all the boys were nice kids and I hope they had fun. 

Grandma bought these bubble guns for the boys...that's our nephew behind Bennett. The 3 of them had a full day with water blasters, squirt guns, and trying to make a slip and slide out of the trampoline.

Work on the new house is rolling on - at a nice rate. I told too many people that our builder wasn't the fastest but so far he's got a great pace going. These foundation walls were poured on the 8th.

This shot shows the basement floor filled with gravel after the rough plumbing was done. Date:5/15.

Because the man doing our excavating is a friend and co-worker of Jared's he let him drive his skid steer to help fill and compact the garage.

The first day of framing and the back half of the house walls went up. Most of the entire west wall is wood framed to save cost on concrete and allow stucco the whole way for appearance sake.

Here is a view from inside my studio space in the basement. You can see across the rec room (Jared's pottery and ping pong table room) through to the family room. Above the family room is a deck which wasn't covered when I took it so that's why it has daylight coming in.

At the end of that day this much of the upstairs was finished. The photo shows the area where the mud room, master bedroom/closet, and bath will be.







There are some small walls, more sheeting and a couple adjustments to be finished but I am very pleased with the progress this week. This is from the backyard, the corner that appears to be missing walls is a deck that will be under the roof line.

Memorial Day we spent in Wellington. These are Sego Lilies we spotted on a walk out to the waterfall in the next picture.

This looks like I had a black and white camera but that's pretty much the color, or lack of it, where this water flows down. It's very interesting to see it in the midst of a lot of desert looking landscape.

The Gooseberry Leaf Globemallow... one of my favorite plants, so cute but tough. There'll be some in our next landscape...I can hardly wait to get that all going but there are piles of dirt and lumber in the way!

April

Nice surprise - footing and foundation crew came early.  We were ready but had been told it'd be later in May, this happened on the 3rd. The rest of the post is about April.

In a few hours, a crew of 7 or 8 guys laid out forms for footings. Yay!

Uh oh - big truck ran over our (Jared's) hard work. That 2x4 lying flat was a vertical, 2' tall marker, circled by orange paint, pointed out by general contractor to subcontractor which was NOT to be driven over.  Who needs plumbing anyway?

Switching gears - the boys Spring Break was a "staycation" for us, included a visit to a trampoline park, the This Is the Place Heritage Park, and to Wellington.

We had a fun time crashing Grandma's with cousins on the weekend of Bennett's birthday.  Most of the time the living room looked like a tornado had passed through and come back again.

Easter egg masterpieces. That tie-dye looking one was Jared's work. Perhaps I'm rubbing off on him. Fyi, using eggs with naturally colored shells can result in some nice colors - the deep red one was a darker brown egg and the orange was a pale brown to start with.

Funny story behind this colt - a little mule. His mother (our neighbor's horse) was off to the trainer when the trainer called to let him know she had delivered a colt. They had no idea she was expecting.  After an 11 month gestation they realized she had encountered a donkey in Idaho and this little guy was born April 1st. No fooling.

Just flowers because I like them.

March

Two red heads and a brunette attending conference together.  These three cousins went together to the Saturday afternoon session of General Conference. Some of us got there really early and the others squeaked in just in the nick of time. While we were waiting Grandpa and Paxton read some interesting facts about the Conference Center.

We took an early Spring Break and went to St. George. While we were driving we asked the boys what they would like to do and the first thing they said was to go to Dixie Rock. We quickly learned that Bennett is our family's safety officer as he pointed out many dangerous areas.

Both boys loved the swimming pool. We had great weather and small crowds so we took advantage of the pool a couple of times.  I think Paxton finally understands that opening his eyes underwater causes them to itch for hours afterwards.


Here is Bennett photo bombing a wonderful picture of Jaylene's girls. I don't think the kids understand the difference between sand and water. They would dive in the sand as if it were water.

When we got back to the vehicles we dumped out enough sand from their clothing that would fill a large sand box.  Yes Paxton enjoyed being buried that deep in the sand. Bennett too.
















How come this boat won't spin like the little tea cup ride?

The real reason we wanted to go to St. George - what beautiful girls! It was so fun to see J and have the kids play together. We all feel like we're so blessed that we are such a great fit with each other for our unique families.







This is part of a display kitchen that has us reconsidering white upper cabinets for our new home. These are all quarter-sawn oak with a natural or very light finish. They're just so charming and I love the short little pyramid details on each corner. Maybe someone can help as to what they're called, I don't even know if they are plugs or tacks that are pounded in or what.

Feb

We don't have a lot of news for the month - hence the egg photo.  I started increasing the light in the coop in late Dec and in the last few weeks the hens have gotten back into laying.  Often we get 10-12 eggs a day.  So the neighborhood business is back on track with plenty to spare.

We celebrated President's Day by bowling of course.  We managed to start before the crowds but by the end the place was full.  Bennett used his superhuman strength to bowl with any ball in the rack.

Paxton had a two handed approach that might be the next fad in bowling strategy. He and Bennett were both good sports about trying their best and not being upset if they didn't knock all the pins down.

I wish Jared had gotten into the shot but he was taking the photos when his scout group went to KSL for a tour. They said the anchors and weatherman were friendly and it was a fun experience.

I have found those infinity scarves work great to cover your ears, head AND neck.  I go out to the chicken coop each night to close it up and sometimes I just want to be warm.

Our cats seem to like their new home better than the old one.  They do what cats do. Sleep, play, sleep, eat, sleep, and then take a nap.

We meet with our builder Friday to get a cost breakdown before we submit the plans to be engineered and then approved by the city.  I still HOPE we can break ground in March but we do want to get things right so I suppose that's more important.  Sorry Mom and Dad - we love you and we're working on giving you your house back : )

January

This cute trio of cousins went tubing at Gorgoza Park with moms, one dad, and grandma. They have 3 lower lanes for the youngest tubers and then more lanes higher up the hill for big kids and anyone else willing. We had a perfect day of sunshine, without bitter cold, and it wasn't busy.

Aren't we glad that technology has progressed to accommodate our laziness. We get to spend more time on our rears and enjoy the beautiful outdoors!

This little light saber duo was the last time Jack got to come over to aunt Amy and uncle Jared's house. We were a little sad to leave after we sold it but we felt strongly it was the right time to make the move. 

I have to give Jared loads of credit for putting up with my re-arrangement of our "studio" apartment even after all the heavy lifting we've done over the past week. Our couch is under the bed in this picture. But it's starting to look much better now with space and storage for all our necessary tasks, sleeping, office area, small pantry (inside the tv cabinet), and studio corner - with a bay window mind you. My parents are very generous to allow us to stay with them while we build the new house just through their backyard.

With the help of an expert tractor guy (my pa) we pulled this shed into it's final resting place. We built it last fall out in the middle of the empty lot with the hopes of getting it moved when needed. Despite a temporary mishap, it worked out to do it while the ground was still frozen. Currently, much of the lot is a muddy mess and more rain is coming.  But we do seem to be on track to start digging in March. If the mild weather continues we may ask the builder if we can get plans approved to start earlier. I can't help but wonder why we have so many "non-essentials".
